GIFT Nifty Trading Hours, Lot Size and Settlement Details

by Streamline

Indian markets respond to global cues every morning, and GIFT Nifty is one of the first indicators many participants check before the domestic session begins. It is an index futures contract listed at the international financial services centre in Gandhinagar, and it tracks the benchmark Indian equity index. Before using it as a signal or trading it directly, it helps to know how its timings, contract size and settlement work.

What GIFT Nifty Is

GIFT Nifty is a US dollar-denominated derivative contract. It moved to India in 2023 from an earlier Singapore-based arrangement, which brought offshore trading in the benchmark index under an Indian regulatory framework. The contract is a futures product, so its price reflects market expectations of where the underlying index may settle on a future date.

Because it trades while the domestic cash market is closed, GIFT Nifty is often read as an early indication of how Indian equities may open. It is a guide rather than a guarantee. The opening gap between the futures price and the previous domestic close can narrow or widen once the local session starts.

GIFT Nifty Trading Hours

GIFT Nifty trades for close to 21 hours a day, Monday to Friday, in two sessions. All times below are in Indian Standard Time.

  • Session 1: 6:30 AM to 3:40 PM

  • Session 2: 4:35 PM to 2:45 AM (the following day)

The break between the sessions is short, which lets the contract stay active across Asian, European and US trading hours. Session 1 overlaps with the domestic market, which runs from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM. Session 2 covers the period when European and US markets are open. Economic data releases, central bank decisions and overnight moves in global indices can all shift the contract before Indian investors start their day.

Trading calendars differ from the domestic market, and holidays at the international centre may not match local ones. The exchange publishes the schedule, and checking it avoids surprises around festivals and year-end.

GIFT Nifty Lot Size

Lot size is the number of index units in one contract. Contract value is the lot size multiplied by the index level. At an index level of 25,000 and a lot size of 25 units, for example, the notional value is 625,000 index points’ worth of exposure, expressed in US dollar terms.

Lot size is not fixed forever. The exchange revises it from time to time, and published sources have shown values of 50 and 25 units at different points. Anyone relying on an older figure risks mis-sizing a position. Check the latest contract specification on the exchange’s website, or with your broker, before placing an order. The same applies to tick size, which sets the smallest allowed price move and therefore the gain or loss per tick for each contract held.

Since the contract is quoted in US dollars, currency movements also affect returns for participants whose base currency is the Indian rupee.

Expiry and Settlement Details

GIFT Nifty futures follow a monthly expiry cycle, and recent specifications place expiry on the last Tuesday of the contract month. If that day is a holiday, expiry typically moves to the preceding trading day. Expiry rules have changed over the years, so confirm the schedule before holding a position near month-end.

Settlement is in cash and in US dollars. No shares are exchanged. On expiry, the difference between the contract price and the final settlement price is credited or debited to the trader’s account. Positions that remain open on expiry are closed at that final settlement price, which is derived from the closing level of the underlying index.

Daily mark-to-market also applies. Gains and losses are calculated each day against the settlement price, and margin is adjusted accordingly. If an account falls below the required margin, the broker may ask for additional funds or reduce the position.

Margin and Risk Considerations

Futures are leveraged. A small move in the index can produce a larger percentage change in the capital deployed, in either direction. Initial margin requirements depend on contract value and on the rules of the exchange and the broker, and they can be raised during volatile periods.

Eligibility is another point to verify. Participation rules vary by investor category and account type, and not every domestic account is enabled for trading at the international centre. Overnight sessions also mean positions can move while you are away from the screen, so many participants use stop orders or reduce position size.

Using GIFT Nifty Alongside Other Tools

For most readers, GIFT Nifty works best as one input in a broader routine. A Stock Screener can help narrow down domestic stocks by criteria such as earnings growth, valuation ratios, volume or price momentum. Reading the early GIFT Nifty trend alongside the results of a Stock Screener gives context: if the futures contract points to a weak open, you may want to recheck the entry levels on screened names. Neither tool predicts outcomes, and both depend on the quality of the data and the filters you set.

Comparing the contract with the previous domestic close also helps. The gap, whether positive or negative, indicates the direction the market may open in, but intraday moves can reverse it.

Key Points to Remember

  • GIFT Nifty trades in two sessions for roughly 21 hours a day on weekdays.

  • Lot size has been revised over time, so confirm the current figure before trading.

  • The contract is cash-settled in US dollars, with monthly expiry.

  • Leverage raises both potential gains and potential losses.

  • Specifications, hours and expiry rules can change, so refer to official exchange notices.
